Denture Checkups are a Must!
Regular check-ups will help determine the need to alter or repair a denture. These check-ups can help maintain aesthetics by making sure the proper relationship between the jaws is preserved. Keeping jaws in a proper functional association will prevent a premature aging appearance by sustaining the features and shape of the face.
The jaw joints located in front of each ear are called the temporomandibular joints and go through a continuous change in shape during life through a development known as bone remodeling. This life long process is a functional response of the body. If dentures are not adjusted properly this can lead to improper jaw function. Therefore, as a result of an improper bite caused by unadjusted dentures, it is very likely that the joints in the jaw will remodel and cause problems in relation. This may result in a number of pathological conditions with impaired jaw function, headache as well as other pains in the head and neck region.
The upholding of healthy oral tissue is vital for optimal comfort in long-term denture use. A valuable side benefit to occasional denture check-ups is the precaution of detecting possibly serious oral pathology, perhaps even early detection of some cancers. This early detection and precautionary side benefit is at times even more important than finding denture problems. Sometimes, discovery of problems in early stages, rather than later, will save the trouble, cost and emotional distresses of radical and sometimes devastating therapy for developed ailments.
Problems with dentures that are detected early during a regular check-up can often be remediated by adding an acrylic resin to the inside of the denture in order to create a closer fit against the alveolar ridge. In addition, unevenly worn down teeth can also be adjusted, replaced, or even built up. Eventually, all dentures will have to be replaced, given that they last not much longer than 10 years. However, typically if you visit a qualified dentist periodically, you will not have to replace your dentures anytime soon.
