Dental Insurance in the UK

While the NHS has dental coverage, some might not be entirely happy with the results when the job is done. These people can either leave it as it is or go to a private insurer and private dental office. There are a couple of different private insurer’s in Britain.

The largest dental provider in Britain has, at the moment of writing this article, 1.8 million people that are insured with the company.

There are several plans that you can choose from. One of the major plans is for children. There is nothing more important than for your child to have good and healthy teeth.

Dental plans for children are split into 2 categories. One of those plans is the capitation-based children’s plan. The other plan is a maintenance based children’s plan. Both of the plans have supplemental insurance already included with both dental insurance plans.

The maintenance-based children’s plan really covers only the basic dental care. It does include taking x-rays, examinations, cleaning and preventive dental advice. It also includes hygiene treatment which allows for scaling and polishing of all of the teeth. For the actual work that needs to be done to your teeth you will need to pay for yourself. For example, if your dentist makes x-rays from your teeth to see in what health they are and. if they are growing in the right way .those costs will be paid for by the insurance company. However, if the dentist discovers that there are some cavities in the teeth they will need to be filled. For that part of the treatment you will have to pay for it on your own.

When you choose the capitation-based children’s plan, all of those above mentioned costs will be paid for by the insurance company. Any lab fees that you might incur while having you treatment are not included and you will receive a bill for those. The bill can come either via your dentist or the lab and will be sent to you.

As comprehensive as the capitation–based plan is there are certain things that are not covered. If for example, you need to be sedated or partially sedated, you will have to pay the dentist the cost of the sedation medication. Also, if you need dentures made, you will have to pay for those out of your own pocket, unless you have another dental insurance plan that covers all of your dental work.
