Oral and Dental Hygiene
Proper care of the teeth and gums can keep the mouth healthy. Brushing of teeth can prevent cavities, gum disease and tooth loss. The first toothbrushes known to man came along in 3000BC and were invented by the ancient Egyptians. The toothbrush of that time was made from twigs and leaves. Today there are toothbrushes made with man made bristles and usually have a plastic handle. This type of toothbrush came about in the 17th century in Europe. The use of a soft bristle toothbrush is recommended as well as a brushes made with an angled head.
Correct brushing of the teeth should be done three times per day. The teeth are soft after eating so brushing should not be done until 20 minutes after completing a meal. The teeth should be brushed from side to side first than switching to a circular motion. Brush in between teeth with a back to front motion. The tongue and roof of the mouth should also be brushed at this time. It should take no less than three minutes to properly brush teeth.
Toothpaste comes in many different flavours, colours and each has their own special additives. These additives can be used as a tooth whitener, plaque dissolver and most will help fight gingivitis. There are all natural toothpastes on the market that include ingredients like Echinacea and Aloe Vera. These natural ingredients can help with oral wound healing and often. One ingredient that any toothpaste should have is fluoride. While most tap water contains fluoride it is not enough to help teeth.
Flossing of teeth is an essential part of oral health. The floss is meant to get into places that a toothbrush can not. Floss should be carefully inserted between two teeth. Start with the back teeth and move forward during this process. Curve the floss in a letter C and carefully slide it up and down each tooth.
Dental visits are recommended every six months. During the regular check-up a dentist will clean the teeth, review x-rays, check teeth for any signs of decay and check for any signs of oral cancer. In one of the two yearly visits a dentist will complete a comprehensive exam. This is a thorough exam where the dentist examines the entire mouth, head and neck. They will also check the patients bite and the way that the teeth fit together.
